Several Big Sandy High School students attended the Model United Nations held at the Ornelas Center in Tyler on February 3 and 4. The students divided into five countries: Brazil, China, Pakistan, Sudan, and North Korea. Students participating were: Miriam Hobma(Brazil), Wynn Worthen (Brazil), Jordan Fisher (Brazil), Erica Elliff (Pakistan), Susan Hilton (Pakistan), Cassie Case (Pakistan), Garrett Hopkins (China), Joshua Stanford (China), Christine Wilson (North Korea), John Bruhn (North Korea), Cassandra Jackson (Pakistan), Waylon Baird (China), Jacob Mooney (Brazil), Savanna Reed (China), Sydney Chandler (Brazil), Mikala Pena Bell (China), Becky Roper (Sudan), Whitney Gage (China), Micah Gilbert (Sudan), Kalyn Brisby (Sudan), Crescina Shipman (Sudan), Keith Read (North Korea), Iris Hobma (Brazil), and Caleb Fisher (China).
These students participated in writing resolutions, preparing AV presentations, making collages, building maps, and writing impromptu resolutions. This year three trophies were won: Brazil won 1st Place Best Delegation General Assembly, Brazil won 1st Place Map, and Sudan won 2nd Place Collage. Two individual medals were won: Sydney Chandler (Brazil) won a 1st Place medal for the UNICEF and Miriam Hobma (Brazil) won a 2nd Place medal for the WHO. To win these medals, students had to debate resolutions with informed speeches speaking several times. Several resolutions passed the General Assembly were written by the Big Sandy students.
This year, the Model United Nations had some very difficult competition; however, as always Big Sandy Students were up for the challenge.
