Big Sandy FFA had the most successful year to date a few weeks ago in Houston TX. FFA members spent their spring break working hard all week at the 2009 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The showteam hauled 14 head to the show and competed with 3 in the scramble show as well. The team brought home over $7000.00 in earnings from the show, and to add 7 head in the top 5 of each breeds classes, 2 class winners, 1 division champion and one overall reserve champion that landed in the supreme champion drive for Mr. JW Howell with his Simmental Cow Calf Pair. Matt Mckinley, Lathan Pilcher, and BJ Beason all brought home calf scramble certificates that total over $4,500.00 to put towards a new calf project. They will return in 2010 with the projects to compete for $70,000.00 in scholarship money.
One of the other big honors was the team placing in the overall Herdsman award that consisted of every FFA Chapter and 4-H Club in the state that attended the show. Big Sandy Showteam members worked from sun up to sun down working cattle and taking care of the stalls that earned them the Top Ten Award placing 10th overall!
