On May 19th, the Junior High and Elementary GT students attended the Region 7 Robotics competition. The Elementary teams were sponsored by Mrs. Blavier and the Junior High teams were sponsored by Mrs. Beall. Elementary took 3 teams and Junior High took 2 teams. Both campuses performed very well at the competition. There was 101 teams total. The highest scoring elementary team came in eleventh with a tie between tenth, eleventh, and twelfth. That team was the Shooting Stars which consisted of Karina Moody and Liam Urwiller. The other two elementary teams came in 43rd and 79th. The highest scoring Junior High team came in thirteenth. That team was the Super Nerds which consisted John Caldwell, Mikayla White, Nathan Wigington and Olivia Wynn. The other Junior High team came in 77th. It was a great experience for both groups. The students are looking forward to competing again next year.
The Big Sandy FFA held Chapter Officer Elections on June 3rd with 14 competing for the top 7 positions. The officer candidates must have completed their Freshman year, Fill out an Application and go through an interview process. These officers must be in good standing, exhibit leadership qualities, develop a Supervised Agriculture Experience Program and they will lead the upcoming 2009-2010 school year. The team will travel in the summer to many leadership camps, Texas State FFA Convention, and an Officer retreat where they will develop the Program of Activities for the upcoming year. This weekend the Big Sandy Majorettes competed at the STATE UIL Solo and Ensemble Twirling Contest in San Marcos. Erica Elliff, Jerryne Veal, and Cassandra Jackson performed a two-baton advanced group routine and did a great job. Also performing in the highly competitive solo category Erica Elliff wowed the crowd with her advanced routine that was full of tricks and flair. Overall the girls had a great trip and a great year. Mrs. Morrow, their director, would like to congratulate them on all their hard work throughout the year to make it to this prestigious contest.
